Dr. Conrad W. Worrill

Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1962, Worrill was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, where he began reading extensively about African and African American history. That period of study sparked a lifelong commitment to African-centered education and social justice. After returning home, he earned his degree from George Williams College and later his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

In 1976, Dr. Worrill joined Northeastern Illinois University as a professor and Coordinator of Inner City Studies. There, he mentored generations of students, athletes, and community leaders—instilling in them a sense of pride, discipline, and responsibility. He believed that education and athletics were inseparable tools for empowerment, each building character and confidence in young people.

During Harold Washington’s historic 1983 mayoral campaign, Worrill co-founded the Task Force for Black Political Empowerment, helping mobilize one of the most influential grassroots movements in Chicago’s history. As National Chairman of the National Black United Front (NBUF), he championed reparations, African-centered curriculum reform, and economic self-determination for Black communities across the nation. He also served as Economic Development Commissioner for N’COBRA, and played a pivotal role in the Million Man March and the UN World Conference Against Racism in Durban, South Africa.

Through every chapter of his life, Dr. Worrill remained grounded in the belief that athletics could inspire leadership and social change. He saw the track, the classroom, and the community as extensions of one another, each a space where young people could test their limits and define their destiny.

Dr. Conrad W. Worrill passed away on June 3, 2020. Still, his spirit endures in every student-athlete who strives for excellence and every organizer who believes in the power of self-determination. His life reminds us that true greatness is measured not by medals or titles, but by the lives we uplift along the way.
